You can make perfect, golden French toast with crispy edges and a custardy center using just common pantry ingredients. This simple recipe removes the doubt and delivers a comforting breakfast fast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large slices of bread (Texas Toast or Brioche work best)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for the griddle

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until the mixture is uniform. This is your foolproof French toast batter.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt until it foams slightly.
  3. Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides quickly. Do not let it soak too long if you are using thin bread; a quick dip is key for fluffy results.
  4. Place the coated bread onto the hot, buttered skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the French toast is golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Repeat with the remaining slices, adding a little more butter to the skillet as needed between batches.
  6. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For extra fluffy French toast, use slightly stale or thicker bread like Brioche or Texas Toast.
  • If you want a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with half-and-half.
  • You can prepare the batter ahead of time and keep it covered in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
