You can make this rich, silky smooth chocolate syrup from scratch in under 10 minutes using simple pantry ingredients. Stop buying syrup and start drizzling this superior topping over your ice cream, pancakes, or mixing it into your coffee or milk.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the sugar, cocoa powder, and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Whisk the mixture constantly until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture begins to simmer.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook for about 1 minute, stirring occasionally. Do not boil rapidly.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
  5. Allow the syrup to cool completely. It will thicken as it cools.
  6. Pour the finished chocolate syrup into an airtight container for storage.

Notes

  • For a thicker sauce, reduce the water slightly or simmer the mixture for an extra minute or two.
