Make this retro Hanky Panky recipe for your next gathering. This simple appetizer features a creamy, savory sausage and cheese mixture baked on toast points, making it a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for game days or parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 24 slices pumpernickel bread or French bread rounds

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the pork sausage, breaking it up as it cooks, until it is fully browned. Drain off all the grease completely.
  3. Return the cooked sausage to the skillet. Reduce the heat to low.
  4. Add the softened cream cheese, cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to the sausage. Stir constantly until the cheeses are melted and all ingredients are combined into a smooth, creamy mixture.
  5. Spread a generous layer of the sausage and cheese mixture evenly over each slice of pumpernickel bread or French bread round.
  6. Place the topped bread slices onto the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the topping is hot and bubbly and the edges of the bread are lightly toasted.
  8. Serve these easy party bites warm immediately.

Notes

  • You can prepare the sausage and cheese topping ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to two days. Assemble and bake just before serving.
  • If you do not have pumpernickel bread, rye bread or sturdy crackers work well as a base for these savory bites.
  • For a slightly spicier flavor, add a dash of hot sauce to the cheese mixture.
